While serving abroad, volunteers can do coursework they have arranged with their universities. ILP is not a university and does not offer credit. If you arrange to take courses with your university, generally, taking more than about 6 credits is usually a lot of work to complete while you are abroad. You only teach half a day each day, but there are so many things to experience and enjoy that you probably won't want to use your time abroad reading textbooks in your apartment. Even so, some volunteers have taken as many as 18 credits while serving as volunteers. The decision is completely up to you.
To make your coursework both appropriate to your field of study and meaningful, contact your university/department advisor as soon as you have been assigned so that you can coordinate your coursework with your specific teaching assignment.
Many colleges and universities encourage their students to have a semester of coursework away.
